There is a frequent mention of fog in Code Name Verity which relates to the use of fog in Victorian novels, such as Jane Eyre, to convey a feeling of dread or foreboding in a location. The fog in Code Name Verity obscures the dark truth behind the war. Julie occasionally refers to a plan called "Nacht und Nebel" or "Night and Fog". This was a plan used by the Nazi soldiers in WW2 to dispose of certain troublesome individuals that they had captured without there ever being any trace of evidence that they existed. They theoretically vanish into the night and fog. Julie, who embodies this motif of hidden truth, discovers that she has become part of this plan and accepts her impending fate. Also, there are two instances that I noticed in the novel where a character is smoking and the author mentions that the smoke shrouds their features. The first is when Julie is having an emotional heart-to-heart with Maddie, and the second is one of the occasions that von Linden visits Julie in her room. In the first, the smoke illustrates how Julie is reluctant to show weakness or emotion, and also how she is afraid to reveal her true self underneath all of her aliases. The second can be taken one of two ways: the first being that he is hiding the extent of his power or his evil, as Julie says that he came in smoke "like Lucifer himself"; or that he is hiding his soft heart (that occasionally shows when he is with Julie) under a facade of fire and brimstone.
